Gloucestershire Hospitals - Education and Training in Anaesthesia

Gloucestershire offers a dynamic educational environment for anaesthetists at all stages of training. With a strong commitment to clinical training and professional development, the department provides a wealth of teaching opportunities across many domains in anaesthesia.

Current teaching opportunities include:

  • Novice Trainee and Novice Obstetric Training – Comprehensive induction and hands-on guidance to build a strong foundation in anaesthetic practice.

  • Block Club – A dedicated forum for refining regional anaesthesia skills through expert-led ultrasound teaching.

  • Weekly Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) Teaching – A structured learning opportunity focused on learning from interesting cases.

  • Departmental Teaching – Regular sessions covering a broad spectrum of anaesthetic topics

  • FRCA examination teaching – for trainees sitting primary and final examinations

  • Regional primary and final FRCA teaching – a regular teaching programme across the Severn Deanery aimed at those sitting upcoming FRCA examinations

  • Sedation study day for core and ACCS trainees

  • Multi-Disciplinary Training – Collaboration with surgical, obstetric, and critical care teams to foster teamwork, communication, and excellence in perioperative care.

We recommend that this SIA runs in parallel with a clinical SIA, achieving both at the end of six or twelve months (WTE).
