Gloucestershire Hospitals - Anaesthesia for Ophthalmic Surgery
Gloucestershire is a leading centre for ophthalmic surgery, offering extensive training opportunities across two dedicated eye theatres in Cheltenham, supplemented by additional surgical lists in Tewkesbury. Resident doctors will gain hands-on experience in a comprehensive range of anaesthetic techniques, including topical, sub-Tenon, peribulbar, and general anaesthesia.
Residents will work alongside expert surgical teams and be exposed to a diverse array of ophthalmic procedures, such as:
- Advanced corneal surgery
- Complex oculoplastic procedures
- Vitreoretinal interventions
- Squint correction surgery
- Management of ocular trauma, including globe rupture
- Specialist paediatric ophthalmic surgery
The Cheltenham eye theatres operate five to six days per week, supported by a highly skilled team of six consultant anaesthetists with two paediatric anaesthetists, and four SAS anaesthetists. Dedicated paediatric ophthalmic lists run fortnightly, ensuring exposure to the unique challenges of ophthalmic anaesthesia in children.
