Teaching Days
Primary FRCA
Please see for a list of all Primary FRCA Teaching days
It has been our intention not to clash with Final fellowship teaching, as well as half term etc. Topics suggested are guides only to try and cover most of the syllabus and can be amended. I have chosen the dates to prevent clashing with Final FRCA teaching sessions, exams or holidays (as much as possible) and to maximise opportunities prior to exam dates.
I have mapped the topics in the newly revamped syllabus to the expertise in different hospitals and adjusted some of the content. Weston-super-Mare is welcomed as a new teaching venue. I have included a couple of specific exam related BMSC courses but these are not funded as part of the teaching programme but are subsidised for Bristol trainees and are highly recommended.
I am very keen to maximise the learning opportunities and would ask that the trainees are contacted (through Julie Flowers) 2 - 4 weeks in advance with a specific request to complete either on-line Anaesthetic e-learning modules or specific reading tasks, so that the session acts more like a workshop/tutorial and less like a lecture.
Robin Cooper, Anaesthetic Core Programme Director
Final FRCA
Final FRCA teaching days take place on Fridays generally once every three weeks. Please see Events tab for a full list. If you would like to change any of the days listed below can you please contact Ian Ryder, Lead for Final FRCA Teaching Programme.
Post Fellowship Study Days
There are approximately six PFSDs a year, please see Events tab for a full list. These are organised by the senior trainees for post fellowship trainees. Each hospital within the rotation takes it in turn to organise the study days.
You need to start thinking about dates, venue and subject of the day at least three months beforehand. Your college tutor knows the month in which their particular hospital is responsible for organising a PFSD. This information is distributed at the School Board meeting each September. Plan the study day for any date within the month, but AVOID Fridays because it clashes with pre-fellowship and primary teaching programmes. Wednesdays are a good day because all flexible trainees work on a Wednesday, but avoid the first Wednesday of the month, which is changeover day.
What to do!
When the date of the study day has been arranged email Julie Flowers, School Support Manager, and she will put the date on the website together with the programme (if available).
At least one month before the date inform:
- The Education Lead
- Trainee Representative (Dom Hurford). He will distribute the information to trainees of:
- The exact date of your study day
- The title of your study day
- A detailed programme, when available
- Detail of the venue
Please send copies of any feedback (or a summary) as appropriate to the Education Lead after the event.
Simulation Courses
There are many courses run at the Bristol Simulation Centre aimed at anaesthetists. These include:
- Novice course for anaesthetists
- Transport of the critically ill
- Team training for critical incidents
For more information see the Bristol Simulation Centre website.
Other Courses
New-2-ICU Course
This is a course designed for Foundation or junior ST grade doctors who have started or are due to start working on an intensive care unit. The course provides practical, hands-on experience, making these doctors capable and proficient in the basic requirements of junior doctors in the day-to-day running of an intensive care unit both during the day and at night. It will also teach them the skills and knowledge they will require to manage emergency situations prior to the arrival of senior help.
The next New-2-ICU Course is on 7th February 2012, for further information and details please follow the link to the New-2-ICU website
Management Courses
The management course for trainees in Anaesthesia at Keele and Brighton University are popular.
Deanery Courses
The Severn Institute Multi Professional Generic Skills Programme consists of 9 modules. The earlier modules are aimed at junior trainees and the latter ones such as Leadership and Management are aimed at senior trainees coming to the end of their CCT. The course is funded centrally (£50 per trainee per module) and therefore the delivery of the modules is free at the point of delivery and held on a variety of dates commencing in October in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Bristol North Academies. Trainees who sign up for the modules and fail to attend will be penalized by having to pay £50 for their next module.
Details of the programme are available on the Regional NHS Managed Learning Environment (MLE). You can find this at http://lms.e2train.com/nhssw.
